Growing Guide

Okra is a tropical plant, growing optimally in hot, humid climates. Well drained, fertile sandy or silt-loam soil with a pH between 6.0–7.0 is best. Assure adequate soil moisture throughout the growing season.

Direct seed or transplant into the garden once soil temperatures reach 70°F, more optimally 75–90°F. Enhance germination by soaking seed overnight in water prior to planting. To direct seed, plant one seed every 6 inches, 1 inch deep, allowing 18–36 inches between rows. Thin to one plant every 12–18 inches. To start seeds indoors, fill 2–4 inch pots with a sterile seed starting mix. Plant 2 seeds per pot, ¾ inch deep. Use a seedling heat mat to warm the soil. Transplant 4–5 week old seedlings outside 3–4 weeks after the last frost, 12–18 inches apart, allowing 18–36 inches between rows.

Follow a 3 year crop rotation cycle. Avoid planting into cool soils. Remove stink bugs that cause wart-like growths on pods.

Pick fruits when young and tender (about 5–6 days after flowering). Handle with care as fruits are easily injured. Daily harvests increase overall yields. Store at 45–50°F. Okra pods may be damaged if chilled below 45°F.
