Start From Seed: Detailed instructions for direct seeding, or starting seeds indoors and transplanting.
CHAMOMILE Use the flowers of this famous ‘sleepytime’ herb to make a bedtime tea. Start in late spring after the last frost when the soil temperature is about 60-70°F. Sow the tiny seeds on the surface of the soil, without covering, and keep moist until they germinate in about 2 weeks. Harvest the flowers at peak bloom and dry for use all year. HYSSOP These beautiful plants attract butterflies and bees to the garden, and are wonderful in bouquets and herb teas. Start seeds indoors in the spring or direct seed outside when soil temperature is above 60°F. Plant seeds ¼ inch deep and keep moist. They germinate in 2-3 weeks. Transplant 12 inches apart in full sun to partial shade. MEXICAN TARRAGON This sweetly flavored tea herb is actually in the marigold family, so it serves multiple purposes in the garden. Start indoors in early spring, or direct seed after the last frost. Plant seeds 1/8 – ¼ inch deep and keep moist. It germinates in 1-2 weeks and is easy to grow. Place plants 8-12 inches apart in a full sun location. LEMON BALM This fragrant, lemon flavored herb has multiple medicinal virtues, and is easy to grow in a sunny or partial shade location. Start in spring or fall either indoors or directly in the garden. For best results, refrigerate the seeds for 3 weeks before planting, then sow on the soil surface without covering. Plant about 12 inches apart.
