This excellent variety from Rutgers University does well in heavier, clay soils. It produces flavorful, medium to large diameter green spears with purple tips that are delicious steamed or grilled. Our 1 year old crowns are 2-3 inches long with ~dime-sized bud tips. Ships mid-February – mid-May – shipments based on grow Zone. May be delayed by weather conditions. Ships to Contiguous US only.

Start From Seed: Detailed instructions for direct seeding, or starting seeds indoors and transplanting.
Be sure soil has warmed to 50°F before planting out your 1-2 year old crowns. Deeply loosen the soil in the planting area to provide good drainage. Create a furrow 6-8" deep (shallow end for clay soils), allowing 36-48 inches between rows. Place crowns 12–14 inches apart in the furrow (closer for Sweet Purple), spreading out roots like an octopus. Cover crowns with 2-3 inches of loose soil, gradually filling up to the original soil level as the shoots grow up. In the first year, allow the spears to grow and fern out without harvesting to establish strong plants. Cut ferns the following spring before new growth resumes. From the second year onward, cut the ferns in the fall after they die back naturally. Maintain consistent ground moisture throughout the first year to establish the planting, after which the deeply rooted plants are pretty drought tolerant. Apply compost or aged manure each fall or spring.

Choose a permanent location for this long-lived, widely adapted perennial. Asparagus prefers full sun but can accept partial shade (reduces yield). Rich fertilization is important, with a well drained, weed-free soil (pH 6.5–7.5) necessary for long term success. Allow enough room for the roots to spread out a few feet in each direction.

Chewing damage can indicate asparagus beetles, which can be controlled with natural pyrethrins. Keep weeds under control by hand weeding in spring and covering with a thick mulch.

Beginning in the second year, harvest spears for two weeks in mid-spring. Use a sharp knife to cut the spears at an angle about 1” below the soil surface. In the third year, harvest 4–6 weeks. In all subsequent years, harvesting can go for 6–8 weeks. When most spears have diameters less than 3/8" allow new spears to emerge, fern out and create a canopy. Store spears in the refrigerator to keep up to two weeks.
