Dear Organic Gardeners

It's been a wild winter so far in many parts of the country with record low temperatures in the northeast and record snowfall or rains elsewhere. We know it's hard to think about garden planning when you're jump-starting your car in sub-zero weather so you can get to the hardware store to buy heat tape for your frozen pipes or simply trying to find your car under the drifting snow, but we hope we can inspire you to do just that.

In this edition of The Cutting Edge Steve Peters entices us to try out the 15 new introductions from this year's catalog with new and interesting information about the varieties and how they've found their way into our catalog. Emily Skelton shares some of her ideas about garden planning for maximum productivity and includes a special piece about gardening with her toddler son Gabriel.

We've also got some great new books and gardening and kitchen products for 2004. And we are proud to premier a stunning new necklace by renowned silversmith Nancy Shapiro. She based her design on the Seeds of Change Mandala which was originally found on a traditional Nepalese planting stick, and the result is truly a work of art. You can be among the first to own this heirloom-to-be.

Micaela Colley's "From the Field" this month reports on the Organic Seed Growers Conference that was recently held in Corvallis Oregon and I add a short report on the Restoring our Seed Conference held last November in Brattleboro Vermont. It's plain to see that the organic seed movement is picking up steam and we're more than glad to have played a seminal role in getting it all started and to continue to lead the way towards making high-quality organically-grown seed a reality for all gardeners and farmers.
