Threshing AmaranthDear Organic Gardeners

As I sit and write this, the cool space under my table is stuffed with baskets of squash, garlic, potatoes, yacon, and carrots. Overhead hangs licorice mint, lemon balm and catnip. The greenhouse is full of dried amaranth, corn, beans, and more squash while coldframes flourish with mustards, lettuce and radicchio. Arugula and Tai Sai lay nestled under row cloth. There are even a few tomatoes still ripening in the paper bags on the floor of the greenhouse. November is truly a time of abundance.

It is also the time for mailing our all-new certified organic bulk seed catalog, including nearly 170 varieties rigorously trialed with the market grower in mind. November is also the time for finishing up our 15th annual garden certified organic seed catalog. After a couple of months of hard work, this one is shaping up to be our biggest and best ever. New seeds, new seedling collections, new tools and more. So, please accept our apologies for being so long in writing and if you're not on our mailing list please call us at (888)762-7333 or go onto our website if you'd like to receive either of our new catalogs in the mail.

In spite of all the flurry of fall activity, our crew has managed to come up with some fine articles for the fall season. Head Seed Cleaner Lynda Prim provides some inspiring information about growing and harvesting Amaranth and Quinoa, while Assistant Farm Manager Jordan Rainwater, just back from her honeymoon (congratulations Jordan!), has another enlightening farm report. Bulk Seed Representative Micaela Colley reports back on a tasting of many of our bulk varieties, cultivated by some of the Bay area's premier growers, and attended by some of San Francisco's finest Chefs.

And finally, Agricultural Planner Steve Peters and Farm Manager Erica Renaud share a wealth of information on storing vegetables through the fall and winter. Needless to say, it is a little more detailed than just sliding them under the table in a cool corner.

Enjoy the fruits of fall and stay in touch,
Scott Vlaun, Editor
