Jordan checking seeds.Farm Report: January 2003

Happy New Year! January is an exciting time of transition here at the Research Farm. As we come close to finishing cleaning our growers' seed crops from 2002 and evaluating last year's data gathered during our field trials, we look forward to the upcoming growing season. Micaela Colley and Steve Peters have been busy planning and coordinating this year's cooperative variety trials with growers. These trials are conducted in different regions of the United States to evaluate our varieties under various growing conditions. Growers participating in these trials serve as valuable extensions of our own research team by collecting horticultural data throughout the growing season and sharing their results with us in New Mexico.

The seed cleaning season here at the Research Farm has been enjoyable as always. It is wonderful to see and feel the fruits of our growers' labor. This year, we purchased an additional gravity table to assist us in cleaning seed-lots too small to run on our larger version. Also new to the Farm is a cold-storage unit. This unit will allow us to facilitate growing, evaluating, and storing biennial root crops in the coming years.

We recently seeded 14 varieties of onions here at the Farm, our first of a myriad of crops that will occupy our greenhouses this winter and spring. We are now planning which varieties will be grown at the Research Farm for evaluation this year. Soon the process of cleaning up the fields in preparation for spring plantings will begin. We'll be direct seeding poppies in the field before we know it.

Other exciting news is the 23rd annual Ecological Farming Conference (Eco-Farm) held in Pacific Grove, California. This sustainable agriculture conference is a tremendous opportunity to learn about the latest advances in agricultural production, research, marketing, and important issues surrounding these topics.Seeds drying on tables. It is a wonderful time to meet with other individuals passionate about agriculture, to exchange valuable information, and to infuse the spirit with inspiration and enthusiasm for the approaching growing season. Several of our growers will be attending Eco-farm as well-a great way to further connect with our valued seed growers. Read all about Eco-Farm in our next eNewsletter.

Cheers!

and the entire crew at the Research Farm.
