Dear Organic Gardeners,
September is a time of great bounty and beauty in the garden, but it's also a time to acknowledge the cycle of the seasons and prepare our gardens for the winter ahead. While we're reveling in the harvest from our farm and gardens, we're also composting plant residues, sowing cover crops and readying our beds for fall garlic planting. Additionally we're pulling out the floating row cover, grow tunnels and cold frames to extend our season for fall salad greens. Here in Maine, it's time to add manure and lime to break down and "sweeten" our soil through the winter months.
